In Interview with Recondite

Next Saturday, May 11th, The Cityfox Experience event purveyors will be presenting Regenerate at the Brooklyn Mirage with Recondite (live), Adriatique, Hot Since 82, Monolink (Live), Anja Schneider and more scheduled to perform.

A longtime collector of music, Recondite had his first experience with drum machines and synthesizers just a few years ago in a small studio right next to the forest in Lower Bavaria. It wasn’t long after that he moved to Berlin to build up Plangent Records, where the artist rapidly established his name. “Plangent #001” was well-received, and with three strong EPs released in 2011, he grabbed the attention of Scuba, who included “Backbone” in his DJ KiCKS mix and quickly put out two Recondite remixes on Hot Flush.

“On Acid”, his full-length debut, was delivered in 2012 via the sleek Los Angeles imprint Acid Test. The Absurd Recordings sublabel had already featured revered releases from Donato Dozzy and Tin Man, and Recondite’s LP garnered a great deal of positive feedback from the press and major producers alike. Continuing to release on his own Plangent series, he also put out the “EC10 EP” on Dystopian in early 2013 – a record that’s as tough as it is experimental. Progressively, this all lead up to his sophomore LP and first release on Ghostly International, “Hinterland”.

The record acknowledges the finest moments in his previous releases, and ultimately creates what he believes is something that captures the personality of Rottal-Inn – a district in southeastern Bavaria, Germany and his hometown. The rest of Recondite’s career is well known, including releases on Innervisions, Afterlife as well as what are now some of his biggest label mainstays: Dystopian, Hotflush Recordings and, of course, his very own Plangent Records.

We took the opportunity to chat with Recondite about his recent releases, his upcoming album and, of course, the upcoming gig in New York City, for which you can find tickets HERE.

Q&A: Tim Engelhardt Talks America, Studio and Live Setup while on Debut United States Tour

One of Cologne’s youngest and brightest electronic music stars on the rise, Tim Engelhardt didn’t crash the scene out of nowhere, but started his path as a young kid, first trying to rewrite the piano pieces he had to practice at the tender age of eight, already showcasing the creative and musical mind that would eventually lead him to become the respected and prolific electronic music producer he is today.

Tim discovered the music of Robert Babicz early on and, under his influence and mentorship, became churning out track after track, growing his portfolio with plenty of releases on labels such as Traum Schallplatten, WIR, Babiczstyle, Amuse Gueule, Ostwind Records, Popart Music, Playmusic Productions, Parquet Recordings, Manual Music and Steve Bug’s iconic Poker Flat Recordings – all in just four short years, before eventually showcasing his music on imprints such as Dixon’s Innervisions and Cityfox.

Currently in the midst of his debut USA Tour, Tim took the time to talk with us in between his successful debut at Cityfox in New York and his stop at Chicago’s Spybar for 3feetdeep tomorrow night.

City of New York Shuts Down The Brooklyn Mirage, Cityfox Experience Cancels Party

The City of New York has shut down The Brooklyn Mirage again, the second time in three weeks, based on an e-mail sent by the Department of Buildings to the local community board. The shut-down is caused by a series of safety violations that were discovered when inspectors checked out the space today.

Specifically, and according to the aforementioned e-mail, inspectors discovered wooden platforms and decks that didn’t appear structurally sound, gas piping that had been installed without a permit, extension cords being used instead of permanent wiring, plywood structures that weren’t fire-rated and no evacuation plan for the site. The note also mentioned other problems, including missing exit signs, unsafe exits and missing documentation on the scaffolding used on the structure.

This follows an earlier DOB vacate order for safety hazards as well as police crackdown in May during a Cityfox Experience party, when authorities found the venue was selling alcohol despite not having a license.

The Cityfox Experience had a massive party lined up for tomorrow, June 18th, featuring Richie Hawtin, Eagles & Butterflies, Julia Govor, Rebolledo and more. It appeared at first that the party would still be happening at The Brooklyn Mirage without sale of alcohol. Now that the property is officially shut down, CityFox was given no option but to cancel the party. Below is the official statement:

The Cityfox Experience Goes On Despite Weather and Liquor Concerns During the Brooklyn Mirage Opening

For underground house music in New York City and surroundings, today was lined up to be the joyous re-opening of the highly anticipated Brooklyn Mirage, welcomed with a Cityfox Experience lineup boasting Adriatique, Thugfucker, Atish, Frank & Tony, Henrik Schwarz, Matthias Meyer and Bilaliwood.

Clues that various logistics were not cooperating with the party began to surface earlier in the week. Bad weather forecast and the prospect of a rainy day at a mostly outdoor venue had began to dampen the mood. Yet, Cityfox communicated amply through their social network channels that the event was, “rain or shine,” and that, “if outside is untenable, we have an incredible indoor space called The Great Hall that can host.” They went further to specify that, “Indoor space is not crammed, is bigger than outdoors.”

This morning, hours before the event was scheduled to start, Cityfox took to Facebook with a post containing notes for the event. Suddenly the official verbiage changed slightly, the note specifically stating that “The event will be taking place outdoors: currently, there’s a tiny chance of drizzle (though forecasts are improving), and it will be a bit chilly.” They advised to dress warm and noted that to counter-act the bad weather, they had set up a coat check, “heat stations” around the outdoors dance floor and would be giving out free ponchos, hot coco, tea, with other food vendors on site. They did mention an indoor lounge in the adjoining Great Hall, yet set times posted on the note clearly pointed to an outdoor music stage with no music playing inside.
