Dublin City Guide with Hybrasil

He might have followed a familiar path to Berlin, but Hybrasil is very much a Dublin man at heart. An individual who seems to be enjoying a fine time of it of late, he has enjoyed a particularly prolific summer, with gigs alongside the likes of Carl Cox, Sam Pagagnini and Len Faki (all in Ibiza) among those worthy of note.

As well as being a DJ and label owner, Hybrasil is a also a prolific producer and live act — and it’s within this domain where his talents really shine through. His latest release for Gregor Tresher’s Break New Soil, the ‘Ascended’ EP is a fine indication of where this man is at sound-wise right now and is the sort of release that’s indicative of Hybrasil’s long stint in the production game.

Recently Hybrail released his Ascended EP on Break New Soil, which you can find here.

For the latest in our City Guide feature, we got in touch with Hybrasil, as he gave us the lowdown on his favorite restaurants, pubs, clubs and record stores that Dublin has to offer.

Detroit City Guide with Eddie Fowlkes

Detroit, of course, is the home of techno. It’s also where the term Techno Soul first cropped up, courtesy of Detroit techno originator, Eddie Fowlkes.

Eddie Fowlkes is the history of Detroit Techno and not just because his handprints are cemented on the Detroit Historical Museum’s “Legends Plaza.” His 30+ years of moving a dancefloor and his 150+ deep catalog of soulful classics speak for themselves. After attending a 1978 Charivari party with his older sisters where he saw DJ Darryl Shannon mixing records, Eddie requested a mixer for Christmas. From that time on he mastered the art of DJing leading to his first release in 1986. That release on Metroplex Records, “Goodbye Kiss,” helped establish what would come to be known as Detroit Techno. In the 1980s, he performed with three turntables, a mixer, wah-wah pedal and the 808 & 909 drum machines and this revolutionary style of DJing pushed the boundaries of what a disc jockey could be.

In 1993, Eddie Fowlkes found a name for his distinct sound: Techno Soul. Techno Soul is Detroit techno, 70s funk, the Motown sound, Parliament, and Chicago house. Eddie’s DJ sets reflect his productions that are an evolution in one track, from house to techno and back again. Eddie has many recordings and remixes on major labels and independents dating back to 1989 (Elektra Records, Sony, BMG, Warner Brothers, Azuli, Tresor, P.I.A.S). Of the Detroit originators, Eddie is not simply just a great DJ or just a great producer – he is equally strong in both avenues. Eddie never rested on his laurels but has always worked hard. He continues to create, to push boundaries, to release music on his two imprints (City Boy Records and Detroit Wax Records), to charm dancefloors worldwide, and to represent Detroit musical talent at its best.

Late this 2018 Eddie will have three 12 inches coming out on his label, Detroit Wax. In 2019, he has upcoming projects with Jeff Mills and Loco Dice, proving the man is as busy and versatile as ever.

Some people think Detroit is just grime and grit, but it’s more than that.  So, what does the DJ of Techno Soul do for fun and relaxation? We have asked him to take us to his favorite hangouts:

Vancouver City Guide with JGarrett

In an effort to highlight local music scenes throughout the world, we find it important to also underscore other offerings these cities have for electronic music fans who may be thinking of traveling for a show, festival or just to be tourist for a weekend.

And who better to ask about a city than local artists who can shed a light on the must-see and must-go-to spots in the area?

We begin in Canada, and Vancouver to be precise. For this City Guide we have invited techno producer and DJ JGarrett to share five of his favorite local spots. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan Josh came to techno and house within the shadow of Detroit and with direct involvement in the Detroit techno and rave communities of the ‘90s. In 2000, Josh relocated to Vancouver and over the years has become an integral member of the Vancouver Techno scene, from running the well-respected label Subspec Music as well as a key member of the Proper Event Productions crew.

JGarrett has appeared in lineups with Ben Klock, Regis, Slam, Drumcell, Truncate, Kyle Geiger, Annie Hall, Perc, and many other luminaries of the techno world. He has releases and track appearances with a variety of labels including Perc Trax, Gobsmacked, Dirty Minds, Decoy, Advanced (Black), SubSensory, Urban Kickz, and his own Subspec Music.
