How to Survive Burning Man: The 6AM Guide

Burning Man

We published this story a few years ago, ahead of Burning Man’s Carnival of Mirrors in 2015. Yet, our guide is still applicable this year as it will be in years to come. Enjoy it in its entirely below!

Another year has passed, and another year has arrived. We have departed the nomadic realm of the Caravansary last year and have entered the spectacular kingdom of the Carnival of Mirrors. This year’s Burn will indeed be the Greatest Show on Earth with 60,000 wandering souls descending upon The Playa at Black Rock City. The Man will stand atop a circus tent in all its glory, and we will see the effigy cycle through birth, death, and a grand rebirth in flames again.

Burners new and seasoned must follow the fundamental Ten Principles to utilize the true transformational potential of Burning Man. The Ten Principles are the foundational ethos in a community that values creativity, inclusion, and liberty. With Burning Man fast approaching, here’s our comprehensive survival guide to this year’s Carnival of Mirrors.

Ignite: A Cinematic Journey Depicting The World of Burning Man

There’s films and then there’s cinematic journeys. The first you watch and then carry on with your life as you were, but the latter literally remain with you. Cinematic journeys take over your thoughts, they influence your actions and ultimately become catalysts for real life moments, with the ultimate potential of changing everything and anything that they influence.

Ignite is one of those cinematic journeys, a Burning Man experience like no other. If you’ve been to Black Rock City for the annual pilgrimage that sees tens of thousands visit each summer, you already know that words cannot and will never do the experience any justice. And frankly, nor do any of the videos you have likely seen posted on social media depicting what are just mere isolated moments of the much bigger journey that is being at Burning Man.

It is because of this that Director Ryan Moore has decided to pour his heart and soul into Ignite, a no-holds-barred cinematic project that will catapult watchers into the world of Burning Man like no other film has ever done. Out of over 70,000 attendees this year, Ignite were 1 of 25 in total that were granted all-access by the event organizers, enabling the team to gather mind-blowing and unique footage in the process. Shot with professional equipment like the Red Weapon 8K Helium,  the same camera used to film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Transformers: The Last Knight, the film is now in the post-production process. All that is needed to complete it is editing it into a finished film, composing the music for it (see more about our Grammy Award winning composer below), and finishing the film in 4K so you can experience it as those that were there did.

Ryan has spent over $25,000 of his own money to cover pre-production and production costs to make sure he could bring the best team to make my vision a reality. He has now launched a campaign on Kickstarter to raise funding for the last stretch of Ignite‘s project. The initial and tight budget goal of $20,000 has been met, but he hopes to raise $50,000 for the team to have the necessary funding to deliver the best product possible. You can donate the campaign here.

In the words of Director Ryan Moore:

Burning Man is something that cannot be described in words, therefore I feel this is the best way of expressing it in a visual format. After all these years of attending I’ve been able to develop a clear vision for what I feel truly represents what it’s like to be there. Authenticity is really important to me. My intention is to show how people connect with one another, the art, and the community. Again, the art and mutant vehicles are wonderful to showcase, but my focus is ultimately on sharing how Burning Man makes people feel. How the event truly affects its participants and how they in turn interact within the event. Capturing the human element and connectedness within Burning Man in a non-verbal way is what I intend to illustrate in Ignite.

The Crew

Producer and Director Ryan Moore is known for directing and producing the feature film documentary Mannynarrated by Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson. For the project, Ignite has sought the musical prowess and genius of Lorne Balfe, a Grammy Award-winning, EMMY and BAFTA nominated film composer from Inverness, Scotland. His filmography boasts an incredible breadth and depth of titles, ranging from major studio (The Dark Knight, Inception, Iron Man, Ghost In The Shell, Terminator: Genisys and more) to independent films, tentpole video game franchises (Assassin’s Creed III, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and more) and beloved animated feature films such as The Lego Batman Movie, Megamind, Penguins of Madagascar and more.

As a cinematographer Neil has worked on films which have premiered at the LA Film Festival while others have been featured on Netflix. Neil also films music videos using his stylish techniques with artists as Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, and Busta Rhymes.

On editing duties is Daniel Freedman, a writer, comic book colorist, film editor and director with a large portfolio of work including work for Warner Brothers, Lions Gate, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, Apple, HP, Adobe, Vice, Nylon, the Cobrasnake, Dim Mak records, Roc Nation and more.

The Black Rock Desert Floods and What They Mean For Burning Man 2017

Planning to make the yearly trip to Black Rock City this summer?

It is likely you’ve seen videos and sensationalistic headlines claiming that the annual pilgrimage to Burning Man may be canceled this year due to heavy rain falls and resultant floodings.

Local reporters from the Reno Gazette-Journal, a news outlet that is part of the USA Today network, took a trip to Black Rock Desert a couple of months ago to check out the situation and report on the impact it may have on Burning Man. What they found was knee-deep water which they were able to kayak on, a giant mud puddle from the heavy rains that fell in Northern Nevada in January and February of this year. See below for videos and photos of the current scene.

Livestream Burning Man from Anywhere

BM

Unable to make the pilgrimage to Black Rock City this year? Don’t fret! It can come to you.

For Burning Man’s 30th anniversary, the festival organizers have teamed up with YouTube to live-stream the event from August 29 until its last day, September 5. They have installed cameras all around the city which will provide unique views of the festival grounds, especially at night.

Over 70,000 burners are scheduled for attendance and this year’s theme is Da Vinci’s Workshop which is primarily focused around the mid-15th and early-16th century republic of Florence. During that time, Florence was known for its humanist ideals, rediscovery of science, and the class of entrepreneurs that fueled a revolutionary cultural movement in Western civilization. Sound familiar?

You can watch the live stream here or visit Burning Man’s website.

Burning Man 2016 Ticket Info & Dates Available

Burning Man

Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to building a strong community that builds itself around various forms of art, self-expression, and self-reliance.

Burning Man 2016 is fast approaching and ticket information has just been released detailing this year’s important dates for ticket registration, ticket sales and more. The first important date is this coming Wednesday 10th of February at 12pm (noon) PST, when the first Pre-sale registration opens.

It’s important to know that ticket prices and information has changed for 2016. While price for regular tickets is the same as it was last year at $390 per ticket, a 9% tax is being added amounting to $34 for each ticket. This is to cover the Live Entertainment Tax being imposed which Burning Man ends up falling under. Please note, however, that the creators of Burning Man have submitted an inquiry on the matter with the Nevada Department of Taxation and should the tax be found not to apply after ticket sales commence, they will issue a refund for the 9% collected.

This year’s Leonardo Da Vinci’s Workshop theme has also pushed Burning Man to introducing a small tier of 1,000 tickets at $1,200 for those who are willing and able to offer support through this medium. Pre-Sale ticket prices will also rise from $800 to $990, with the aim to keep prices the same for everyone else.

Please note that all sales require registration through Burner Profiles, so it’s highly recommended that those interested in making the trek to Black Rock City do so as early as possible. Registering does not guarantee access to a ticket or vehicle pass and due to the event’s ever-growing popularity is is important to be on top of dates to increase your chances. Burning Man does a great job in providing a handy timezone calculator so that you don’t miss any crucial dates, no matter where in the world you are coming from.

See below for the initial important dates to keep in mind:

Burning Man 2016 Theme: Da Vinci’s Workshop

Manbase.AJ_

“Five centuries later, we will attempt to recreate this potent social alchemy by combining Burning Man art, maker culture and creative philanthropy to make Black Rock City the epicenter of a new renaissance.” – Larry Harvey and Stuart Mangrum

The Burning Man organization has announced the art theme for next year’s Burn, titled Da Vinci’s Workshop. The theme is of course inspired by the fundamental inventiveness and social ideas of artisanship of the Italian Renaissance during much of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Renaissance can be considered the quintessential art period that is taught in pretty much every art and art history class around the world, so it is proper for Burning Man to dive into the roots of Western art’s greatest movement.
