In Interview with Ben Sims

With over two decades of experience under his belt, Ben Sims has a well-deserved reputation as one of the world’s most in-demand and leading techno DJs and producers – a tight, energetic mixer who skilfully weaves together his own distinctive blend of tough funk and hard grooves.

Sims doesn’t follow trends and is one of those now-rare DJs who takes his skills behind the decks as seriously as DJs used to in the ’80s and ’90s. Ask anyone who matters in the techno world and they will agree: Sims is a no-compromise artist who has constantly evolved while always remaining faithful to the underground sounds of techno. It comes as no surprise to anyone versed in the techno scene that Sims is also widely-known and appreciated for his three-deck wizardry and dexterity, as his now-viral Boiler Room at AVA Festival from earlier this year proves.

Win 2 Tickets to Prototype 062: Droid Prime – Ben Sims, Kobosil, Raíz

On October 7th, Prototype and Droid are teaming up again to bring you two international techno talents to the Arts Los Angeles District at Lot 613. Joining us for the night will be none other than Ben Sims and Kobosil, as well as Droid residents Raíz.

A name that’s firmly steeped in the scene, the UK techno powerhouse that is Ben Sims is as prolific as they come, putting out over 50 releases in what is regarded as some of the most intense and forward-thinking music of recent years in the scene. To parallel his hard driven and unforgettable offerings, he created a handful of his own label imprints, the most esteemed of them being Theory – a label that has garnered heavy support from the likes of heavyweights Marcel Dettmann, Adam Beyer, Robert Hood, and Rolando to name a few off the extensive list. A true pioneer when it comes to performance, his sound is distinctive and beyond intense as he keeps sets constantly evolving through the full utilization of 3 deck mixing and turnable wizardry. His technical skill is high above what you might expect from some of the best techno DJs on the global scene.

Acting as accomplice to Sims for the night is an artist who came and conquered Lot 613 last year, Berlin-born techno hot shot Kobosil. Appearing on the global radar seemingly overnight, Kobosil has proven himself to be a legend in the making. Since putting forth his initial formative releases on his own label RK and the well-regarded label Unterton, he has quickly caught stride, giving even the most veteran techno players a run for their money (this statement is fact checked by a highly revered residency at Berghain). Kobosil’s niche in techno is best described as a combination of hypnotic, ambient, yet delightfully darker and deeper variations of the genre. Opening up the night and setting the mood right will be sure things Raíz.
