Music Monday: Listen to Adriatique’s Essential Mix Debut

In this week’s appointment with Music Monday we listen back to Adriatique’s Essential Mix debut from this past Friday.

The two Adrians paired up for their first Essential Mix on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show, delivering two hours of forward-thinking music that incorporates their signature melodic and dark house, paired with modern cuts and hypnotic, entrancing elements.

Recorded in a club in Basel for optimal sound, the mix is peppered with enthralling instrumentation, captivating soundscapes and the addictive hypnotic vocals that have made the Diynamic duo one of the most respected acts in today’s underground dance music circuit. The recording includes music from Peter Kruder, Mano le Tough and Larry Heard, as well as new music from Adriatique themselves.

Listen to the mix via BBC Radio 1 or via SoundCloud below:

deadmau5 Chooses Techno and House To Launch His 2017 BBC Radio 1 Residency

deadmau5 studio

Last week deadmau5 made news when his New Year’s Eve set at Decadence NYE in Arizona became subject of attack by fans of EDM artist Marshmello, who took the stage after him to perform the headlining set of the night. The reason? According to Marshmello fans the Canadian producer had played a boring set, a perhaps expected and uneducated conclusion from EDM fans who found themselves listening to house and techno tracks by Maceo Plex and Jay Lumen, amongst others.

In the following days the Toronto-born artist was unapologetic and rightly so. In line with his stance, he has now kicked off his 2017 BBC Radio 1 Residency with a debut mix that is filled with underground dance tracks, spanning genres that include progressive house and techno.

There is no denying that Joel Zimmerman as an artist has always preferred to steer clear of the mainstream side of dance music, despite his widely popular progressive signature tracks landing him coveted headlining slots at some of the world’s most popular EDM festivals. As EDM blew up in the States (and the rest of the world) Joel has continuously taken a stance against what he has perceived as sell-out artists playing recycled music for a quick buck. Instead, he has continued to stay true to his roots, while recently perhaps digging deeper than ever with on-stage collaborations with Richie Hawtin and Eric Prydz, as well as solo performances filled with house and techno sounds.

His inaugural 2017 BBC Radio mix is a testament to the direction Joel is on, one he does not look like to be leaving any time soon. The two-hour mix includes a Pig & Dan premiere, as well as works from Maceo Plex, Pan-Pot and Jon Hopkins just to name a few.

See below for full track list and to enjoy the mix:

1. deadmau5 – Imaginary Friends

5.Max Cooper – Distant Light

7. Pryda – The End Is Just The Beginning

Listen to This Playlist Containing Every Essential Mix of 2016

Despite its ups and downs, 2016 was a phenomenal year for dance music, and in particular for the quality of Essential Mixes released on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show.

Midland’s two-hour Essential Mix was crowned as Essential Mix of the Year, an honor that in the past was bestowed to artists such as Ben Klock (2015), Caribous (2014), Eric Prydz (2013 and 2012) and Nicolas Jaar (2011). The rest of the bunch were up there too though, including spectacular renditions from the likes of Âme b2b Dixon, The Chemical Brothers, Seth Troxler, Richie Hawtin and RĂždhĂ„d just to name a few. There is absolutely no doubt that house, techno and the more underground side of dance music commanded the vast majority of Essential Mixes this year, with EDM and its off-shoots receiving less than 10 airplays throughout the year.

We have compiled a special playlist of all Essential Mixes released in 2016 for your enjoyment. As three of them were not available on SoundCloud we included their separate embedded players below also. Enjoy!

Cirez D

Last night, Eric Prydz made his Essential Mix debut as Cirez D with a live set recording from Creamfields.

The Swedish progressive house and techno producer is not new to the BBC Radio 1 show hosted by Pete Tong, with Essential Mixes delivered in both 2011 and 2013, the latter of which won the accolade of Essential Mix of the Year. This, however, is the first time that the British radio show has featured a mix from Prydz’ techno moniker of Cirez D.

He was joined by drum & bass artists Chase and Status who delivered the other hour of the iconic radio show, also with a live recording from the British festival.
