15 Back-To-Back Sets You Need To Listen To

Last year Ben UFO expressed his feelings on the importance of back-to-back sets, attempting to tackle the criticism some have thrown at promoters and DJs alike, with claims that b2b billings are a simple marketing gimmick to sell more tickets.

While there is no doubt that interesting back-to-back pairings do catch the attention of event-goers, the words of the highly thought-of British DJ had us looking back in time at some of the best back-to-back sets ever recorded. We have selected fifteen of our favorites that we think you should definitely give a listen to!

Pryda and Mau5ville Announce Eric Prydz back-to-back Deadmau5 North American Tour

Eric Prydz and Deadmau5 are surely no strangers to playing together, with a few tandem performances already in their long list of achievements.

The two label owners and producers make for an interesting pairing, for despite having a similar approach to progressive house and a penchant for techno, they do have a signature sound of their own that some doubt marries well with the other. Regardless, the two have announced their plan to take their stage collaboration to the next step, with the launch of a North American tour that will see them perform across Canada, Mexico and the United States this summer.

Paradigm Presents Announces Dixon b2b Seth Troxler Open-To-Close Movement After-Party

The Paradigm Presents crew is taking over Leland City Club once more this coming Movement Detroit weekend, with a special edition of their Motorcity Madness series taking place on Sunday, May 28th.

For the occasion, the upstairs section of the historic venue will be taken over entirely by two heavyweights of the techno and house music scene. The artists in question? None other than Detroit-raised Seth Troxler and Innervisions boss Dixon.

The two will join forces for a never-done-before back-to-back set from club opening time until the music cuts off in the early hours of the morning. Knowing how Detroit gets down during Movement weekend this will be the perfect opportunity for those with enough energy to waltz into a cab and make it on time for Old Miami’s doors opening at 7AM for the iconic Need I Say More day party.

Tickets are available via Ticketfly.

The Artistry of Back-To-Back Sets According to Ben UFO

Ben UFO and Helena Hauff going back-to-back at Sonar, Barcelona

Just like with plenty other heated subjects in the broad world of dance music, many are divided on the subject of back-to-back sets. In one camp are those who feel that billing two acts together is a way to sell more tickets or get more heads to a night, while on the other are those who find excitement in seeing artists play together for what they hope is a one-of-a-kind performance.

Here is my mea culpa. As an aspiring young promoter in Chicago I was guilty of booking rising Chicago acts for back-to-back sets for two distinct reasons: while I wanted to show support to both acts by giving them both playing time, I also hoped that billing them together in a slot otherwise dedicated to one DJ could increase the number of people coming out to party. Guilty as charged.

Yet, I learned something special from booking two specific artists for tandem performances more regularly than others. Despite their diverse track selection and music inclination, they would both vibe off of one another to produce sets that the crowd wouldn’t otherwise witness. But perhaps the best thing to come out of this unintentional experiment was the personal growth those acts experienced as artists in their own right, all thanks to being forced into a situation which requires sharper skills and attention as a DJ.

This past week, one of the world’s most respected men behind the decks took to his Facebook artist page to express his thoughts on the subject of back-to-backs. Ben UFO has quickly risen to up the ranks as a no-nonsense DJ with a strong reputation as one of the most accomplished track selectors in today’s electronic music scene, and all of this without resorting to producing music to make a name for himself, but rather solely letting his DJ technique speak for the true quality of his artistry as a tastemaker. The Hessle Audio boss is notorious for playing back-t0-back sets around the world, more often than not finding himself billed alongside acts he has never played with before. The result, he says, is magical and unique in its own way, “Playing this way forces you to step outside of your comfort zone, to react spontaneously to things that are outside of your control, and to maybe reassess habits of your own that familiarity can blind you to.”

He discusses the subject and mentions his upcoming ADE back-to-back performance with Hunee, “we are quite different DJs but i think our attitude is similar and im confident we’ll find an interesting path!”

Watch 1 Hour of Sasha and John Digweed Going Back-To-Back at The Social Last Night

Last night marked the highly-anticipated reunion of Sasha and John Digweed behind the decks together.

The two legendary producers and DJs have remained at the forefront of the ever-changing spectrum of electronic music for the last three decades, all thanks to strong personal integrity, unwavering focus on music quality and undying passion for dance music. For one reason or another however, over the years they decided to move on from the iconic back-to-back sets that characterized their careers in the 90s and early 2000s, deciding instead to concentrate on their solo work when DJing live.

tINI and Bill Patrick Play Over 30 Hours at Sunwaves 2016

Yesterday we broke the news of Marco Carola’s near-24 hour set at Sunwaves festival on Mamaia beach in Romania. The Italian DJ came close to beating his day-long record set last year at the same venue, but came short of a few hours – reportedly he also suffered from technical difficulties in the middle of the set which cut the music off for an unspecified time period.

While 16 hour sets at Sunwaves are barely newsworthy, playing for 24 hours straight is quite the feat. News coming out of Sunwaves right now talk of a back-t0-back set that has now broken that 30 hour mark and is still going strong!

Behind the decks are none other than tINI and Bill Patrick, who have been championing the last day of the festival with a true marathon performance that is still going on as of 13:30pm PST of Monday May 2nd/1:30am local time of May 3rd.

Hats off to both tINI and Bill Patrick for breaking the 30 hour set mark and reaching a total of 31 hours played!

Sasha and Digweed to Play B2B Set at The Social Festival in September

Sasha

On April 1st the dance music community learned that two of the scene’s most respected and sought-after pioneers, John Digweed and Sasha, were planning a possible reunion.

Although at first it appeared to be an April Fool’s joke, staff from both camps confirmed the existence of an imminent announcement without providing more information.

Today, we have learned that Digweed and Sasha are set to reunite at Nic Fanciulli’s The Social Festival on Friday 9th September for a special back-to-back performance in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their album “Northern Exposure.” The festival takes place in Fanciulli’s hometown in Maidstone, Kent in the South of England.

The official announcement, which you can see below, states that the show will be limited to 5,000 customers only. No further information has been provided as to whether the two acts will be playing any other shows in England or elsewhere around the world.
