Side Hustles Artists Can Leverage When Not Touring

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted artists income from touring in a big way, and this is where side hustles come in handy.

While it may be a while before artists see those income streams fully return, there are alternative ways to earn income that are becoming popular. Namely, there are a ton of opportunities in the freelance economy.
It’s also known as the collaborative or sharing economy — which sounds nicer and gives a clearer picture of what freelance work involves. Creative side hustles are a great way to tide yourself over until you can get back on the road.

Heavy touring and its effect on music production: Adam Beyer and Marco Carola

Heavy Touring, Career Priorities and The Effects on Music Production

Let me preface this article by saying that any artist that is able to tour heavily, playing two to three gigs a weekend, should recognize they have a lot to be grateful. Yet, it’s also true that a scheduled filled with heavy touring often has a negative correlation with music production and releases.

This article isn’t meant to portray such as a scenario as unfavorable or as a burden, but the opposite. Further, while I am not discounting the fact that these artists had to work hard to get to that level of touring, it must be recognized being able to play 2-3 traveling gigs every week is certainly a sign that your career is on a great trajectory, and it certainly puts you levels ahead of most electronic music producers and DJs.

How to Know When The Right Time to Outsource Is In The Electronic Music Industry

If you’ve ever started a business or large-scale project it is likely that you have experienced the inevitable feeling of overwhelm. At some point or another, after trying to do everything yourself, it becomes hard to keep up with all the tasks on your to-do list, and especially so when strict timelines are involved.

It has happened to almost all of that at some point in our life: we come up with a great idea, big or small, and need to convince others to believe in it and come on board for the idea to really take off. Think about it, it applies to music producers in search for a label for their latest work, or event promoters looking to launch a new event series.

This can be a dangerous situation because with every idea there are many risks involved. If you can’t get your close friends and acquaintances interested in the idea then how can you convince the rest of the world to? You can get stuck between trying to push it through yourself without the help and input of others, and outsourcing the necessary work in order for your idea to become reality.

No matter your approach, it is often recommended that creatives in both business and the arts focus not on one but on multiple ideas. If you want to grow a plant you must begin with many seeds, rather than plant just one and hope it grows into something.

When it comes to social media, it is the goal of every artist to get themselves and their music noticed, and especially so whenever they have a new release or a upcoming gig that would benefit from getting as much attention possible.
