Celebrating AAPI Members of the Electronic Music Industry

6AM and its community is a wonderfully diverse microcosm of various backgrounds that all share the love for dance music. As May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, 6AM wanted to bring a spotlight to the AAPI artists and dance music industry members that are contributing to our constantly thriving scene. Even with various obstacles and the unfortunate recent aggression towards Asian Americans since the pandemic, there is still a growing talent pool of AAPI artists and industry figures. Apologies in advance to those who we did not get a chance to include in our list and apologies to those who do not necessarily associate themselves as AAPI.

In no particular order, 6AM wanted to bring you this constantly expanding list of AAPI dance music community members.

In Interview: Anakim Discusses the Los Angeles Scene That Bred Him

In a scene that sees thousands of new artists emerge each year, it’s difficult for anyone to truly stand out. Fortunately, that is not the problem for Anakim, a Los Angeles based producer who is making a large impact in the dance music community. Anakim’s dedication to innovative production methods has led him to release his music on some of dance music’s biggest labels including mau5trap, EIN2, Dear Deer, and most recently, Desert Hearts Black, as well as a debut on our Global Vibe Radio mix series for episode 125 back in April 2018.

Anakim began building his unique sound at the renowned Icon Collective Music Production School. After graduating, he continued to polish and perfect his production methods which have led him to unprecedented success, including a coveted booking at Coachella’s Yuma Tent in 2018. Most recently, Anakim was named as one of Billboard Dance’s Emerging artists for 2020.

Kicking off the decade with his Billboard recognition and his newly released ā€˜Poseidon’s Revenge’ EP on Desert Hearts Black, which you can find on Beatport, Anakim is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. We examine his budding career in our chat with him around the release, diving into his unique experience coming up in such a bustling music scene and his path to success on a more global scale.

Premieres: Krafted Underground to Release 23-Track Deep Tech Los Angeles Vol. 2 Compilation

The metamorphism continues in Downtown Los Angeles – from an underdeveloped urban landscape to a thriving metropolis with a flourishing underground music scene.

Arising from this transformation is Deep Tech Los Angeles (DTLA) – a collective of underground house producers from Los Angeles, all striving to build a grassroots movement of music, radio and events.

Established by Jason Trevor Miller aka Redux Saints, the first US graduate of the Toolroom Academy programme, his aim was to provide a medium for LA based producers to be heard through organizing Deep Tech Los Angeles compilations. DTLA Volume 1 peaked atĀ #1Ā for Minimal/Deep Tech andĀ #10Ā for Progressive house on the Beatport album charts. Volume One also gained massive support such as Mark Knight, Friend Within, Walker & Royce, Sirus Hood, Riva Star and Henry Saiz as well as others. Krafted Underground brings you the second installment looking to reach new milestones with impressive new comers to the collective.

DTLA Volume 2; released on Krafted Underground and available for pre-order via Beatport, showcases the deep, techy and progressive sounds that DTLA stands for, featuring tracks from some of LA underground scene stalwarts Redux Saints, Shanto, Contessa, Andy Slate, Lok N Key, P-LASK, 28mm, Thomas Garcia, and newcomers to the collective Anakim, Teddy Wong Juany Bravo, Jaime Narvaez,Ā DMorse and PABLoKEY.
