Rewind: Best Rave Videos from the Past

Rewind: Best Rave Videos from the Past

Let’s take a trip (no, not that kind of trip), but a trip back in time. To a time where raving and partying were a little more magical and a little more illegal  (maybe that added to the magic). Go back to a time where whistles and glow sticks reigned supreme not fan clacking. Back to a time where people weren’t taking selfies for the ‘gram.  It’s fascinating to see how much has changed throughout the years, but also how much remains the same in rave culture. So here we go, let’s begin the trip back to the past.

In Photos: Berlin’s ’90s Rave Era with Sven VĂ€th, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk and More

The 1990s were an interesting period as far as the rave era goes, and especially so in the techno-loving city of Berlin, where the genre pretty much defined the rave scene of that decade. Not to mention of course the wild fun that came with these parties.

#TBT Series: Watch Video of a True 1990’s Old School Rave

90s rave

Welcome back to our weekly appointment with Throwback Thursday, our feature series that travels back in time to look at some of the most iconic, thought-provoking and nostalgic moments in dance music scene history.

This week our time machine takes us back to the early to mid 90’s, the span of years that some still consider to be the heydays of the rave revolution. New York City had already gone through its disco years, Chicago House was being played all over the world and Detroit had soon followed suit in the late 80’s to early 90’s with techno. Across the pond Ibiza fever was taking over and, influenced by the Balearic parties and the sounds coming from the States, the rave scene in the United Kingdom was truly flourishing.

There was no Facebook, no Instagram, no Snapchat and definitely no way to tweet the night away during those years. Just the music, the crowd, a likely illegal venue, your mates and, let’s be honest, some good old ecstasy or MDMA.

The video below, which has been making the rounds on Facebook and already has almost 170,000 views, depicts those years perfectly. Enjoy it and learn a thing or two from those dance moves!

Throwback Thursday: How Much Has Marco Carola’s Sound Evolved Over The Years?

MarcoCarola

The Music On founder has been a very well known veteran DJ and producer in the dance industry for the best part of the last twenty years. From creating one of the most well-respected and followed labels to mixing for 24 hours at Sunwaves Festival in 2015 (and trying to break that record in 2016), he is known for always giving his best behind the turntables, and for his focus on music quality above all else.

For all these reasons he has amounted a massive and loyal following, including ourselves. Given that he’s a seasoned pro and has been in the scene over twenty-five years, for Throwback Thursday we decided to take a look at how his sound evolved from his early days to today.

We compared these two sets from the late 90’s and early 00’s to his BPM 2016 Music On mix. Although it was certainly a different techno scene 16 years ago, it is interesting to see that Carola went from mixing at roughly 150bpm to a slower 130bpm sound, perhaps finding his place in a more groovy blend of techno and tech house than his original roots may have suggested

Listen and determine for yourself how much his sound has changed over the years.

NYC '90s

#TBT Series: What Was It Like to Rave in NYC in the Early ’90s?

The world of electronic and dance music has changed and evolved tremendously over the last forty years. We have seen it all: from the disco days of the early 70s to today’s popularity of EDM, via the birth of house in Chicago and the golden era of techno in nearby Detroit. But what was it like to attend party in NYC during the ’90s?

There is no argument that in 2016, when this article was first written, we were witnessing electronic music live through somewhat of a “back-to-basics” movement highlighted by the growing resurgence in popularity of real house and techno. But how different were things back in the day, before dance and electronic music became a worldwide multi-billion dollar industry?
