Shark Attack Reported at Ibiza’s Playa d’en Bossa

When we hear mention of the word “Ibiza” we think of some of the best nightclubs in the world and idyllic sun-kissed beaches.

Yet this past week something fairly unusual happened on one of the island’s most frequented and known beaches: Playa d’en Bossa.

An 82-year old man was reported to have been injured with a 2-inch wound caused by a blue shark, a species of shark that is usually prevalent in the Mediterranean Sea. He was rushed to the Can Misses Hospital for treatment of the deep wound. Fortunately, the man managed to have survived the attack without major injury and was released from the hospital about 4 hours later.

The attack happened near the Playa d’en Bossa beach, one of the most popular beaches in Ibiza. The area was also home to Space, one of the legendary clubs in Ibiza. Nowadays, megaclubs such as Hï and Ushuaïa call Playa d’en Bossa their home and have become notable in their own right.

As a precaution, swimmers and other beachgoers were ordered to clear the water following the attack. A lengthy search was conducted but the shark that may have attacked the man was nowhere to be found.

It has been noted that this attack is not the first reported incident regarding a blue shark, but such behavior is said to be a rare occurrence. In any case, those planning to hit the Ibiza beaches are reminded to take caution at all times.
