Having released a slew of seminal records and repped some of the best and most world-renowned labels in the game, it’s safe to say that Philippe Quenum is a man who knows a thing or two about electronic music.
A prolific producer, his music has graced labels as diverse as Cocoon, Serialism and perhaps most memorably, Cadenza, where he released the famous “Orange Mistake” alongside Luciano way back when.
Nowadays, Quenum is best-known as being one half of Azimute alongside his good friend Cesare vs Disorder and is just as renowned for his technical ability behind the decks as he is his undoubted studio nous. A DJ for over 2 decades now, we decided to check in with him to ask him about the 5 records that have left his bag.
As you might imagine, they’re a pretty darn classic sounding bunch too!
Iām a huge fan of this label, Cabinet. This track has such a crazy bass line that every time I play it I get a great reaction from the crowd. It has a bit of a linear loop, and itās so effective!
For the music experts this is a classic! I even find that itās not played enough; sometimes when I play it people are a bit surprised, they donāt know the track, but itās up there with the best and itās fire for the dance floor. On top of it, I have huge respect for Daniel Bell and heās a super nice guy.
I love the work of this producer, Deadbeat, I like everything he does. This track especially, has been really useful for the start of my sets. Itās hypnotic, itās a great way to start the journey. It starts gently but then takes off, builds up huge energy, and the crowd loves it, always.
This is one of my favorite tracks on minibar, which is a great label. Itās so classy, so elegant, so sexy. Very often itās the women who come up to me to say they love this track. Irresistible, you just want to dance, so happy, so light – and then it kicks in with a killer bass. Magical production.
This is a track out of nowhere! The first time I heard it, and bought it right away, more than 20 years ago, it was so ahead of its time. Then, a lot of producers were doing full-on techno stuff and this DJ did this groovy, harmonious, emotional track. Also with a killer bass line. Iām Afro-Caribbean and I started as a hip-hop lover, so I canāt resist a good bass line! 20 years later itās as effective and fresh as it was on day 1.
