Playa 101: Burning Man Advice Curated by David Hohme

Over the last decade, David Hohme has been captivating hearts on dance-floors worldwide. The Brooklyn-based producer dropped his debut EP Soft Landing on the world-renowned label Anjunadeep this past April. Featuring three originals, and a mesmerizing remix by Jody Wisternoff and James Grant, Soft Landing is a luminous EP that leaves music-lovers afloat.
Hohme was also recently thrilled to see his collaboration work with Francesca Lombardo and Jonnie King, entitled “MöMy” reach audiences worldwide this past May 11th with a release on Echoe.

It’s therefore safe to say that Hohme has had a prolific year thus far, but we also know that it is anything but over. As summer approaches, he is getting ready for the yearly pilgrimage to Burning Man, where he will join tens of thousands of other music, art and life lovers for the yearly appointment on the Playa.

As a Burning Man vet, Hohme was kind enough to share with us 5 key tips for a successful Burn. Enjoy the insight below.

1. Do Your Research

Burning Man isn’t a music festival or something you should just check off your bucket list. Actually do some research about the event, how it began, the principals it operates under and the culture surrounding it. If you’ve decided it is definitely for you and you want to go
then go well-read and prepared
don’t be a sparkle pony.

2. Get Involved

You will have so much more of a rewarding/fulfilling experience if you get involved with a project on the playa. Art projects, volunteering for the org, bartending, cooking food, early entry
there are infinite ways you can “gift” your time to make that specific year at the Burn just a little, or hopefully a lot better. Burning man, for the most part, runs off the work of its attendants, so don’t be that person who parks and parties, actually get involved and contribute your personal touch. I promise the release after that work will be worth it. Plus you’ll make lifelong friends in the process.

3. Turn Off Your Phone

Really incredible things can happen when people stop making plans, and start living in the moment. I find life’s synchronicities thrive in this space, and the experiences I’ve had every year continually drive that point home. Your playa karma will thank you, and also you won’t run the risk of one of the more hardcore burners smashing your phone or if they’re more nice, just embarrassing the hell out of you.

4. Don’t Chase The Music

Set times exist on the playa, but trust me, you won’t make any of them. Nor should you. Let your flow lead you to the right music.

5. Take Care Of Yourself

I’ll say it again, Burning man is not a music festival. The playa will completely destroy you if you’re not careful/prepared. Nourishing your body with healthy food, staying overly hydrated, getting (some) rest, and being very careful with alcohol are all paramount, in my opinion, to having an enjoyable time on the playa. If you don’t, you will likely have a negative experience and simultaneously annoy/piss off the people around you.

BONUS:

For the record, I’ve heard the same “Burning Man just isn’t what it used to be” gripe since before I even started going, and I think it’s a bunch of bullshit. People say that about anything they get used to, or want to make themselves feel cooler about discovering before others. Throw that in the trash, open up your mind, put a smile on your face, and say yes to living in the moment.
