Magdalena Discusses Her EP Debut on Diynamic and New Headlining Ibiza Residency

2018 has been a busy year for Diynamic‘s leading lady, Magdalena.

After years of only DJing with the collective, she has been honing her craft in the studio and is now releasing her debut EP on the label, only her second full length EP ever. On top of that. she has also announced “Shadows”, her own headlining Ibiza residency for the season taking place every Friday at Blue Marlin and featuring an array of top drawer talent including Anja Schneider, La Fleur, Steve Bug, Nick Curly, The Adana Twins, Andhim and Audiofly, amongst others. When you consider that this is all coming after her headlining Watergate residency from earlier this year, there is no doubt that 2018 is Magdalena’s biggest career year yet.

With so much going on, it seemed fitting for 6AM to catch up with Magdalena to talk about everything going on in her world right now.

Read on for our exclusive interview with Magdalena and head to Beatport to find a copy of her Elementum EP.

Tell us about your new EP Elementum – what was the inspiration behind it?

The idea for Elementum came along whilst I was producing the first track, ‘Mountains of Es Cubells’. I received these voice messages from my good friend Steve from Paris, which I incorporated into this track. And for me, they represented the spirit of what nightlife is all about. To let go and to celebrate life in all its facets.

You’re quite new to production, does it feel like it comes naturally to you now or does it take you a long time in the studio to create something you are happy with?

Actually producing is not all that new to me. But I wanted to take my time for my first release until I was really certain that my music really mirrored who I am as a person. My first release should express the essence of my creative personality.

When and why did you decide to start releasing your productions as well as DJing?

Playing music in clubs is totally different from producing music. As a DJ I have my style and musical preferences but as a producer I have the freedom to express my feelings and experiences. And that’s why after some time it was the logical conclusion to explore these possibilities to their fullest by creating my own music.

One of the tracks on your EP is called ‘The Mountains of Es Cubells’. What is it about this area of Ibiza in particular that you like?

You find people from all over the world from different backgrounds, with different lifestyles, different beliefs and different histories – all united in their love for music. And it really is one of a very few places in the world where you find this connection/feeling and love for music.

Speaking about Ibiza, you’ve just announced your new residency for 2018, ‘Shadows’. Compared to all the other shows you’ve played in Ibiza, what will make this residency special?

What makes ‘Shadows’ incredibly special for me is that it is at Blue Marlin, where I already have countless unforgettable moments. It’s a combination of the unique vibe and energy of daytime parties and a location which I love. And as a plus, I can invite my favorite DJs.

You have a background in running a club, does this help when it comes to planning an Ibiza residency?

I would definitely say so. Years of running one of the most successful clubs all over the world have made me realize what transforms a mere ‘party’ into a holistic experience for the audience. And this helps a lot in creating a new and highly personal concept that captures my visions.

The party is a free evening party rather than late night at a high end club. Is this element important to you?

Blue Marlin is a beach club which is known for its free access. And this policy will be maintained as well for ‘Shadows’.

Out of all the guests lined up for the season, who are you most excited to play with?

Each one of my DJ guests is very special to me and a creative personality which I really adore and admire. I’m super happy to be playing with all of them. But it is common knowledge that Anja Schneider was my mentor and the first one to invite me to her party. Therefore, I am beyond grateful to be able to now return the honor.

Are there any records you think you’ll definitely be playing?

My EP Elementum on Diynamic Music, because it’s very personal and means a lot to me. I’m excited to see the reactions from the audience at my own party series.

The party will run over the course of sunset – what is a quintessential Ibiza sunset record to you?

It’s impossible to just name one. I have a lot in my playlist, so stay tuned for what I’ll be pulling out of my hat.

Will you be checking out any other parties on island this year?

Absolutely. As every year, I will definitely be visiting all my friends’ parties.

What other exciting plans do you have coming up for 2018?

One of the biggest milestones was releasing my first EP and to announce my Ibiza residency. My appearance at Mixmag Lab in LA was published in March. And I’m still very much looking forward to be playing at Sonar, Diynamic Outdoors in Amsterdam, the Diynamic showcases in Istanbul and London and a special one for me is to be playing in a special, unusual location for Cercle.
