Joran van Pol: My 5 Favorite Minus Tracks

Joran van Pol returns to Minus for the first time since 2013 with Edge, a fantastic four-track EP that follows on the heels of the producer’s most recent cinematic techno releases on esteemed imprints the likes of SCI+TEC, Rejected, Ideal Audio and of course his own FADE label.

The Amsterdam artist has also been in demand as a DJ, playing headlining slots everywhere from Space Ibiza to Time Warp, all the while setting up his brand-new studio to keep churning out the tracks that have put him on the map.

In honor of the new EP release, we asked Joran to share with us his all-time favorite Minus tracks:

Plastikman – Panikattack (Second Attack Remix)

“This track is the B side of the famous Dubfire remix of Spastik. At the time I was not yet into minimalistic techno, but stumbled upon this vinyl in the record store and was immediately intrigued by it. Those spacey and weird plings and plongs really grabbed my attention. It ended up being the first record I ever bought from minus, without fully realizing it.”

Gaiser – Wet Contents

For me, Gaiser’s records are really defining for what the minus sound is. If someone asks me what minus sounds like, I tell them to listen to the Gaiser discography. At the same time, Gaiser has developed such an unique sound that when you put on a record, you can immediately tell its one of his. I love his super stripped down, abstract, yet groovy records.

Heartthrob – Slow Dance

For the first 2 minutes this track has a nice groove, but you’re kind of left wondering what is going to happen next. Then all of a sudden there’s a break and this super fat bassline trakes over the entire track. I love how the bassline is the star of this track, whenever I play this out, it always works.

Matador – Spooks

This track was released around the time I started getting involved with minus. For me it marked the beginning of a new phase for minus. I love the super spooky melody of this track.

Whyt Noyz – Volcano

This track was featured on Richie Hawtin’s New Horizons compilation for Mixmag, along with my own track ā€˜Untitled 2’. For many of us featured on that compilation it meant the kickstart of our careers. From that initial group, Whyt Noyz is still one of my best friends. I was immediately blown away by Volcano and still occasionally play it out.
