Nice does not appear to be a well-known town in the techno universe, but venues such as Kwartz Club and Palais Nikaia seem to be flying the flag with regular events that have featured many headline artists. This month JC Laurent launches a new imprint by the name of Cielo Records with a four-track EP called Transparency. His standout productions have led him to release on heavyweight labels like Suara, Dynamic Reflection, Adroit and Warok Music.
An expansive DJ career has had him play at many clubs around France and further afield, allowing him to grace the decks alongside a huge number of internationally known techno names including Anetha, Matrixxman, Marcel Dettmann, Keith Carnal and Tommy Four Seven.
We decided to deep dive the tracks on this terrific EP that has received DJ love from Shifted, Marco Bailey, Charlotte de Witte, Amotik and more…
“Prajna” kicks off the release with a spacey and hypnotic feeling. Drawing on a sci-fi aesthetic, it’s quite stripped back and takes its character from bubbling waves and pulses accompanied by stuttering kicks, that aim to add an edge to its sound.
“Expander” has a head down chug about itself. Classic and futuristic, it’s the perfect mix of simple and precise to appeal to DJs who like a bridging track in their sets. Just enough and not too much, it rides the perfect line to reload the energy in a set with an understated slickness.
Third in the four-track line-up is “Transparency” and the title track doesn’t disappoint whatsoever. Without a doubt a marching and parading club jam that is heavy in essence, yet delicate and bouncing to a seasoned listener looking for that shrewd DJ tool.
“Trikaya” is a saucy broken beat track that dips a toe into tribal tones, but yet resembles techno enough for those who want to add a stunning and complex creation to their bag for surprising a crowd.
