Q&A and 6AM Guest Mix: Pretty Pink

We welcome Germany’s Pretty Pink with a guest mix showcasing her house, nu-dico and deep/tech house sound.

Carrying with herself a background in design studies, Pretty Pink grew up in the rural Harz area of Germany and still carries the forests of her home with her everywhere she goes, both in spirit and through her Deep Woods podcast series. Her remix of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” garnered over 16 million plays, while she also boasts releases on Warner Music, Armada, Universal and Suara.

Her latest club weapon, “Pure,” has been supported by Josh Butler, Sydney Blu, Paco Osuna, Fedde Le Grand, Henry Saiz, Luigi Madonna and if we have to bet on it, you’ve probably danced to it at some point this summer.

Enjoy her guest mix below and read on for our interview with Pretty Pink.

Hello and thank you for the mix! Any tracks in there we should be particularly keeping our ears open for?

Hey and thank you for having me! I added all of my favorite tracks at the moment into the mix as well as many of own production that will help you get to know me and my sound a little better. “pure” is my latest release; it has a distinctive bassline paired with a dreamy synth-arp melody compared to some of my previous tracks. “Repeat” features some of my own vocals ☺ I also added a couple of unreleased tracks for imaginative purposes and insight into upcoming sounds. Enjoy the mix and let me know your thoughts!

What is the mindset you adopt when putting together a mix like this?

I wanted to present my sound through a mix of my favorites from other artists at the moment. The mix is the mirror of what I play on stage – I hope you can feel the power of the tracks and driving rhythms. It is a combination of deep and tech house tracks with a little techno touch.

How similar or different is it to a set you may play in front of a crowd?

I think you can’t do one without the other! Ideas for new sounds often come to me while I’m playing live, then I go to the studio and see what I make of them. When I have finished a track, I play it at the next gig in front of an audience and am curious about the reactions. When people leave, it pushes me over and over again!

You’re having quite the busy summer, lots of gigs! What’s been a favorite so far?

I love the summer festival season! The organizers put a lot of passion into the details, starting with the choice of the location, up to the decoration and that makes each festival in its own way quite great and special! Whether at a lake, on a boat or on a mega stage – when people are celebrating, I’m on fire!

Congrats on the EP that is coming out this September. Balancing studio and live gigs can be difficult — how do you think you’re faring in this regard in 2018?

Thank you! I think that if you love what you do playing live and working on the music is easy to handle. I love to prepare the sounds and test them live on stage to see the reaction of the people, and then tweak the bassline and synths until they’re just right. We are ahead with productions because there are so many good tracks ready to take off but releasing and planning the promo always takes a lot of time too. In 2018 I think we’ve already done a great job, my own label WANDERLUST is putting out two new releases and I will be releasing the full EP in about a month.

Do you have any routines or “secrets” as to how you keep focused with your productions?

When I produce a new track, I already see myself playing it live and then I want to have it finished as soon as possible so that I just get going!

What’s the one city or venue you hope to play one day more than any other?

I really want to play at Tomorrowland! Maybe it will happen someday!

Who are some of the artists you look out to for inspiration these days?

One artist I admire very much is Kölsch.

What were your dreams and aspirations when you first began this journey as a producer and DJ?

I think, anyone who works creatively and puts their ideas into practice wants the results to be seen or, in my case, heard. Whether painter, author or musician. My wish has always been to give people a good time and great moments when they want to go out and dance.

Are they the same today?

Yes, absolutely!

What advice would you give your old self if you had the chance to go back to when you were still seeking your first few gigs?

Go on girl, go on! Believe in you!

Who is Pretty Pink outside of electronic music?

Then I’m just a woman who likes to spend time with her friends and her dog. And likes to sleep late!

I see you have a dog? Tell us about him/her!

Her Name is Mimi, it´s a Bolonka Zwetna and she´s sooo cute! I love her! And of course, it´s a modern dog, so she has her own profile on instagram. Follow her @mimibolonka!

So… how about a U.S. tour?

Oh, I hope, this will happen! I love the US, spending many time during my holidays in the USA and I´m fascinated about the passionate audience there!
