In Interview with Another Day Another (Oliver) Dollar

Respected and in-demand amongst the scene, Oliver Dollar continues to drive forward with the release of his album Another Day Another Dollar.

Sitting comfortably on Luke Solomon’s Classic Music Company, a well-deserved feat, Oliver is currently embarking on a huge celebratory album tour, with whistle stops in Las Vegas, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and much more.

Despite a schedule much busier than the average Joe, we managed to catch up with Oliver Dollar recently to discuss all things album, and music related. Here we go:

Now the album is out there how does it feel? Have you had time to listen back to it?

Feels amazing after all these years of sitting on these lit tracks, and what a crazy coincidence having Classic Music Company pick it up last minute by the man himself, Luke Solomon. Yes, several times, as a matter of fact. And I’m very pleased with each and every track.

Why was Classic the right label? Who approached who?

Luke Solomon reached out to me three days before the release date, which, I was going to put out on my label-Industry Standard, and decided they wanted to sign all 14 tracks. What an honour for me to be part of such an amazing label that has been pushing supreme quality music since the early 90s. What a dream come true!

When you DJ do you play the same sort of sounds that you make? Are the two related like that?

Never, actually, I don’t just play the music I’m producing, it’s all about the vibe, size of the club and I just go from there, and if it fits, I’ll throw in a track or two of my own if I’m feeling it.

Were any tracks real favourites, ones that came together really nicely?

They all came together really nicely I have to say. Each one is unique in its own right, and were selected and collected over the years. I can’t really say I have a favourite, to be honest. They’re all favourites otherwise they wouldn’t be on this album.

And how much effort went into the overall programming and order of the tracks? Was that something that mattered?

Yes, 100%. I put an incredible amount of time, effort and love into each track. I definitely played the quality police whole working on this album.

It took a long time for your debut album but do you think now you might do another in quicker time? Did you enjoy the process?

Not really. It needed years to sort of ripe, similar as to how a good wine takes time to reach it’s peek. I absolutely enjoyed every moment of every hour working on this album. Not to mention the talented guest musicians and homies I got to work with during the process.

You collaborate often – why is that? How do you choose who to work with?

It’s all about the live and vibe you share in the studio. It’s a great deal of fun tossing ideas off each other. Getting fresh and different ideas, it’s the best. I had these ideas and the artists I collaborated with could take these ideas to the next level with beats, vocals, etc.

Do you take on an executive producer kind of role or are you still learning things when you collaborate?

I’m always learning different techniques and getting ideas. I love the energy in the studio, it feels like playing ball. So it’s always a learning experience, for me, but there are times when I am the “mentor”- the word I prefer rather than “executive producer”.

You have obviously often been compared to Moodymann, what do you make of that? Is he a key inspiration? Why so?

What an honor to be compared to Moodymann. He is definitely an inspiration, no doubt. I’ve always loved what he does, his sampling selection, his entire process is amazing. He’s a legend. Maybe the day will come when we work on a track together.

What else have you got coming up/are you working on?

IS002 is in the cut on the process of getting put on vinyl with Detroit legend Mike Agent X Clark. Also, the next releases are with the likes of Robert Owens, Kenny Dope and Mr. V.

I’m also producing a few live music projects in Detroit at the moment. The talent is rich out here, and currently, it feels right musically to spend time here rather than my hometown, Berlin.
