In Interview with Marcelo Demarco

How many times have you heard the phrase, “Only a Matter of Time”? Well, at least this time there’s no bad news insight, but just a new, smashing techno single by Marcelo Demarco.

The Suro Records boss gets back on his label to provide a powerful groove, some rolling basslines and a synth arpeggio with a slight acid feeling, creating a dense, dark atmosphere you won’t resist to.

Marcelo Demarco was born in Uruguay where he developed his unique style, an exotic mix of ethnical rhythms and electronic sounds, all spiced up with deep flavours and always served on a techno base. His productions range from the darkest to the grooviest side of the underground, with hypnotic bass lines and effected elements he attracted support from the best artists and positive interest from international music press and radio.

Also known as Mark Demark, Marcelo has been passionately mixing and creating music since 1996, including thousands of appearances around the World and spreading that particular sound released on vinyl, CDs and digital downloads globally in the most important stores.

Recently, 6AM caught up with Marcelo Demarco to talk about his latest single, how he has been coping with this strange year and more.

Hey Marcelo, how are you, how has the year been?

It has been a hell of a ride so far. I think everybody was hit with the “new normal” but especially the music industry since March live performances were shuttered as a result of social distancing and quarantine.

How has lockdown been – have you suffered?

Not bad for me, I’ve spent the Lockdown in Uruguay where things have been very relaxed and to be honest I do spend a lot of time indoors so wasn’t such a big change for me.

What has life been like without DJing and partying?

I know I am not alone here, all DJs have suddenly lost our main source of income and not only that in my case is my passion and I can’t wait to be back on the decks making people dance.

Tell us a bit about your style/aims when it comes to DJing – are you someone who likes to get people in a trance, or who likes a sense of fun in their sets, or who likes to shock etc etc etc?

My style is dark by definition and I do love hypnotic basslines but I don’t like zombies in the dance floor, I like sudden breaks that cut the trance followed by a massive drop that bring the crowd alive always avoiding that sense of fun that you mentioned, I prefer fierce and sensual than funky and cheesy.

And where is your best environment? A small dark club or a huge outdoor festival stage? Late at night for the weirdos or early so you can play slow and eclectic, etc.?

I really don’t care much about the environment as long I can play free, I hate those places that you must please the promoter request or owner demands. I play hard and dark, sometimes harder or darker depending on how is the night (crowd, environment and my own state of mind).

And when making music, what are your aims, what sounds are you most found of, what is the aim of your tunes?

When I am producing I try always to put myself on an imaginary dance floor and think what I would like to hear, how I would react to this particular sound, every addition to the mix has to be relevant.

Tell us about your new single for your label SURO Records – how was the production process?

Only A Matter Of Time was produced entirely during the lockdown, it was a good experience because I had plenty of time to be in the studio and I do love to be in my studio.

What inspired or influenced it?

Where does inspiration really comes from? I think that is something that happens to you, rather than something that you plan. No idea where it comes from but when it hits you everything comes so naturally and that is how the process of creation works for me.

Should dance music be socially and politically aware or is it a place to escape that?

I think a bit of both, it’s very important to have an escape for all the frustrations of life and the fact that every weekend you can get lost in a dark dance floor is so important, it’s like meditation. It really is a spiritual thing. However, we are part of the world and if we can use music for making it a better place then we should.

What’s next now the release is done?

Producing never stops, I have another release coming on Vitamina Recordings and a remix almost finished for my next release on Suro Records. Also, I’m just waiting for this virus to end so I can meet the crowd again, hopefully soon.
