Born in Puglia, also known as the heel of Italyâs boot, Giorgia Angiuli is a classically trained musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist. Very early on she developed a strong interest for electronic music and started to experiment with new live techniques. From her very first project in 2009 MetĂčo, where she released the album âToyshop,â Giorgia has created a vibrant, unique and interactive performance for her fans.
In 2010 with her audio visual project We Love, Giorgia collaborated with the renown label Bpitch Control, performing in clubs internationally allowing her presence to grow which eventually led her to go solo in 2013. Â The solo project of Giorgia Angiuli stylistically moves between pop, techno and house. She uses her voice to create a dreamy dimension intensified by the use of unique toy instruments. During her set she combines keyboards, drum pad and theremin with the sounds of a toy flute, sax, trumpets and many other toys. Mixing all of these samples and loops she shapes a vibrating and energetic groove that sets the dance floor on fire.
From 2013 to the present Giorgia has had success releasing on some of the biggest labels, Stil vor Talent, Crosstown Rebels, Kindisch, Kevin Saundersonâs legendary techno KMS, Harry Klein, Einmusika, Systematic and Suara to name few. In 2018 her new EP âNo Body No Painâ released on Stil Vor Talent.
The start of 2018 saw Giorgia tour in Europe, Australia and South America.  She will also hit the European summer festival circuit playing at Aquasella in Asturias Spain, Kappa FuturFestival in Italy, Fusion in Germany, Pleinvrees in Amsterdam, Rock’n Solex Festival in Rennes, Audioriver in Plock, Sueno Open Air in Aix En Provence.  At the end of May 2018, Giorgia will embark on her first US tour playing at some of the best venues such as Output in NYC, Union in Los Angeles, SpyBar in Chicago, The Great Northern in San Francisco, Théùtre Fairmount in Montreal, Treehouse in Miami and Here I love You in El Paso to name a few.
It was during this last U.S. tour that we spoke to her to learn more about her love for toys and the incredible way she has been making music.
Ciao Giorgia, how are you and how is the U.S. tour going?
Hello I am writing you from San Francisco, chilling a little in this fantastic city! I just did my last gig of the tour at The Great Northern. The tour has been amazing!
You got to play in Detroit during Movement weekend. How was that experience? Did you get to catch the festival at all? What did you think of the city?
I didnât have time to go to the festival. Unfortunately I spent only a few hours in Detroit. However, I had a great time!
I played at Leland City Club, a fantastic venue at a historic hotel. I loved the party and the vibes, I played just before Ida Engberg and Maceo Plex and the party was sold out!
What has been your favorite part of your stay in the States so far, outside of your gigs and performances?
I was lucky because I had the chance to visit so many amazing cities on this tour. One sunset was really special for me: 8pm in Dumbo, New York. It was a magic moment and I will remember that light, night and that view forever.
Your music has garnered a lot of fans, especially thanks to your impressive live set-ups and the way you use unconventional “instruments” in your sets. When did this first begin for you?
I grew up in a family of musicians, I studied classical guitar at the conservatory and I started to collect toys when I was 18 years old. I have always been attracted by colorful objects and clothing⊠I love cute and little things and I think that beautiful objects can produce beautiful sounds. I am also building my studio and it will be full of colors, I think that psycho-acoustics are a very charming world.
Social media and the use of video has obviously helped showcase your skills to millions around the world? Do you handle your own socials or is there a person/team that takes care of it?
I handle my socials myself. I am not a big fan of social media in everyday life, because it has changed the way we interact with one another and the relationships with have. People spend a lot of time on their phone screens rather than enjoying for example a beautiful sunset. I do know that it has been important in my career though and many videos have gone viral and received a great response, so I do appreciate that. I opened an Instagram account only a few months ago, just for fun. I also uploaded on Facebook some videos from my room where I was playing with some of my favorite toys. These videos got a great response and many likes. I would never have expected this kind of reactions from fans so career wise, for sure social media has been important and Facebook helped me a lot!
What’s the craziest “instrument/toy” you’ve used to make music?
Nice question ;) maybe the cute mini cats, they are Japanese toys and each cat makes a different note, they are very very cute!
You can watch them in action below in this video.
Live set, for me, means something is always work in progress⊠I like to change the setup often and traveling a lot around the world, I take inspiration from many things. Today for example, I was walking around Fisherman’s Wharf and I recorded some lovely sea lions!
Do you also do DJ sets, or just Live?
I play just live.
Have you considered doing the same kind of live show, but with others involved also?
Yes, I am finishing my album and I hope to start a tour with my brother, he is a double bass player and I would love to have a special scenography on stage. I have many dreams and aspirations. I grew with a classical music education.
I would love to collaborate with classical musicians.
By the way, where do you live these days?
I live in Florence, in Italy, but I am originally from the south of italy, from a lovely town on the beach called Monopoli in Puglia.
