German Brigante and Yamil’s Moroccan Twist on “Basari” EP

Sabo’s record label Sol Selectas presents a collaborative release by Spanish artists German Brigante and Yamil. On this track, German Brigante and Yamil are both influenced by the traditional Gnawa music of Morocco as they incorporate funky basslines and melodic elements that are intertwined with tribal percussion, and ethereal vocal chants.

On similar tracks, Amine K (Moroko Loko) and Mr. ID are featured remixers on the EP — both of who are Morocco’s renowned electronic music artists. So who better to rework tracks inspired by the traditional music of their homeland?

German Brigante is an eclectic producer whose music has been featured on labels such as Get Physical and Bar 25. He also has previously contributed to one of Sol Selectas’ Summer Sol compilations and this is his first full EP on the imprint. As for Yamil, he is already a member of the Sol Selectas family and has appeared on a number of the label’s releases as both a remixer and an original artist. Yamil has also worked with labels ranging from Super Flu‘s Monaberry to Pipe & Pochet.

As for Amine K, he has previously been featured on Sol Selectas when collaborating on music with Sabo, but he has also provided solo tracks and worked with other labels including Tiefschwarz‘s Souvenir Music and Dave Seaman‘s Selador. Mr. ID also drops his debut on Sol Selectas after previously working with the likes of Kerri Chandler‘s Kaoz Theory, and he doesn’t hesitate to bring his skilled musicianship and afro rhythms to this EP.

“Kibo” features the incredible vocals and guembri playing of Mehdi Nassouli, and it has a unique organic sound fuelled by bassline tones. The track’s melodic synth and dramatic percussion give it an upbeat groove. The remix by Mr. ID also takes the song to an even deeper, soulful, and deep house territory —  a style that Mr. ID is well-known for.

“Basari” is the EP’s title track, and on the remix, Amine K adds his peak time twist to the tune by lifting the tempo and thickening the groove with some additional drums that are perfect for the dance floor.

The final tune “Gnawa” reinterprets a classic Berber tune with a constant low-slung groove, deep bass, ceremonial chants, and flutters of guitar that build suspense.
