Premiere: Chuck Daniels Presents “Sampled 16 Vol. 1” Compilation in Honor of 16 Years of Sampled Detroit

Chuck Daniels’ imprint Sampled Detroit celebrates it’s 16 year anniversary with a three-part various artists release, featuring essential originals from Chuck, Jesse Rose, Ataxia, Amp Fiddler, AndrĂ©s, Oliver Dollar, Brett Johnson and more.

Founded by Chuck Daniels in 2002, Sampled Detroit has over the last 16 years become one of the world’s most highly regarded and essential outlets for underground house and techno, championing cutting-edge electronic music from artists like Amp Fiddler, Derrick Carter, Jason Hodges, Dimitri Max and of course Daniels himself.

Celebrating 16 years in the business, Sampled 16 will be a three-part release, with the final installment dropping just before Movement 2018 in May with a digital and vinyl release. The vinyl release will get a special packaging treatment by 1x Run Detroit.

Vol.1 boasts some of the most exciting producers in the industry, with eight extraordinary original tracks from Jesse Rose, Hazmat, ADMN, Antwon Faulkner, Piem, Hiroko Yamamura & Angel Alanis, Ataxia alongside Chuck Daniels, all exploring the more Techno side of the label.

Renowned Detroit artist Michelle Tanguay, created the design for all three releases including the vinyl which will be pressed at Archer in Detroit, Michigan.

We also spoke with Daniels ahead of the release:

Hi Chuck, congrats on the compilation release and on 16 years of running Sampled Detroit! What have been some release highlights from the label these past 16 years?

I have been fortunate to be surrounded by some amazing talent many of them close friends. One that quickly comes to mind is a song written by Jason Hodges and William Alexander “Our World.” This is still to date one of the biggest tunes for the label and took the essence of classic Hip House and put a modern day spin on it that was very well received. A second big highlight was a song by my mate, Jeremy Joshua “Thinking About Your Face.” This was also a big tune for us that ended up getting licensed by several different entities including the Dick Clark TV production, “So You Think You Can Dance.” Most recently a brand new Artist for us Burning Bridges is off to a great start. His tune “Low Down” is currently the number one tune on the label and just got licensed to Stacey Pullen’s !K7 mix compilation. Stacey also used a second tune of his called “System.” Having a Detroit Techno legend like Pullen sign two songs on Burning Bridges’ first release is most definitely something to be proud of.

What inspired the artist choices for this compilation?

It happened fairly naturally. When I came up with the idea I reached out to many friends on the label. I also had some tunes I was working on that I knew would be a great fit for the comp. I intended this project to celebrate Sampled’s 15 year anniversary, but when we decided to press vinyl things ran a bit late.

Love the art work, what’s the story behind it?

Thank you! We are so happy with it too. I wanted to maintain the essence of Detroit throughout the comp so we reached out to one of our favorite artists, Michelle Tanguay. Michelle is one of the hardest working and most talented artists I know. I met Michelle at Detroit’s first Red Bull “House of Art” event and fell in love with her paintings. I ended up buying one and it’s hanging on my living room wall. I had some help from my good friend Jesse Corey and his partner Dan Armand at 1xRun who have helped with the creative part. We will be doing a limited run of colored vinyl with some creative packaging that will be out right before Movement, Detroit in May.

What do you envision for the label in the months to come?

Sampled Sixteen is a three part project that will be released digitally, and then a fourth part which will be the vinyl release. This will keep us very busy until May. Most of the music we release happens organically. My focus for the label has never been releasing as much music as we can; I tend to look for projects that have some kind of special meaning behind them. Many of the tunes on the next few releases I have “touched” in some way including mixing and mastering.

Will you be doing anything in Detroit for Movement?

It’s definitely going to be a busy weekend! We are having our annual Official Movement Afterparty at Marble Bar to celebrate Sampled Sixteen. This will be a two room indoor/outdoor event on Sunday. Artists include Riva Starr, Kenny Glasgow, Mark Farina, Dj Heather, Harvard Bass, AndrĂ©s, Rick Wilhite, and a bunch of other great talent. I am excited to be playing Movement this year on Monday on the “Stargate Stage” sometime in the afternoon. It’s going to be an exciting weekend and will forever be our Techno holiday!
