Form and Function. Yin and Yang. Esoteric and straight to the point.
The Belgian techno label has announced its plans to release two series of V/A compilations, the first entitled Form and featuring a “diverse sound palette where the weird and beautiful come together,” and the second called Function for the more dance floor driven tracks. The goal here is for the imprint to showcase two separate styles of techno and electronica, underscoring its wide range of sound in the process.
The first of these Function series comes out tomorrow, September 14th 2018, and features some of the label’s favorite artists: Thomas Hessler, Border One, Phara and SP-X.
FUNC001 hits the spot in all the right ways, delivering exactly what the label has promised with this series. First up is “9AM” by Thomas Hessler, a characteristically hypnotic track that is both ideal for peak-time play and entrancing early morning after-hour moments. Almost trancey in nature, “9AM” is a trip down a deep rabbit hole, captivating the listener and dancer throughout.
The A-side is completed by Border One’s “Cenote.” Here you’re drawn in from the first bell-like sound that permeates throughout the entire track, and never lets go, the type of cerebral track that Form and Function has been known and respected for.
The B-side opens up with Phara’s “LFO Unit.” This is a 1990s inspired track that hits you in the head with heavy kickdrums and a seemingly never-ending percussion build-up, until the track’s dark and broody synth-line drops and continues to soar in and out of more build-ups.
This brilliant EP closes off with SP-X’s “Crossed in Flight.” This one is a “lighter” piece than its predecessors, but fitting for heavy dance floor play nonetheless, sure to get people grooving, moving and shaking.
