Following last weeks’ deadly shooting of police in Dallas, Detroit’s Populux nightclub got itself in a spot of bother when it tweeted anti-Black Lives Matter comments via its official account, followed by retweets blaming Obama, liberals and the BLM movement for the shooting.
Although the club took to their social networks the following morning to distance themselves from the tweet, claiming that their accounts were hacked, the backlash was inevitable by those who not only felt offended by also doubted the club’s hack excuse.
Despite three separate statements attempting to explain their position, most of those commenting on both the club’s Twitter and Facebook pages were not buying the venue’s story. Due to the continuous backlash from the incident, which included artists Vic Mensa and Bixel Boys canceling their gigs due to the Twitter fiasco, the venue decided to not only shut down their social media accounts, but also the club itself pending an investigation on how the hack occurred and by who.
According to The Detroit News, “Majestic Theatre complex spokesperson Greg Bowens said Friday the club will be closed for ‘at least a week’ as owners say they’ve filed complaints with the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Wayne County internet crimes task force to determine the source of several racist tweets that appeared on the venue’s Twitter page overnight Thursday.”
The paper went on to report that other businesses inside the Majestic Theatre complex, including the Garden Bowl and the Majestic Cafe, will remain open while Populux is shuttered.
