Get to know LA’s budding prodigy: Dilate

Starting at the very beginning, what got you into music?

Dilate: I grew up with music all around me with my Dad as an inspiration for my future work as producer & mix engineer. I got to play around with music production software. I was gifted Sony Acid studio when I was 12 years old and was making chopped and screwed edits of hip hop songs.

As I got older I got my hands on a set of Technics and a Vestax PMC-05 pro. I was obsessed with the battle scratch scene and learned from all the DJ Q-bert videos online. I got my first version of Ableton in 2010 and started creating electronic music.

How would you describe your sound?

Dilate: I would describe my sound as being characterized by punchy kicks, rolling low end, tonal textural elements and deep hypnotic rhythms. I like using vocal elements  to create interesting textures.

What gets you in the zone for a productive studio day?

Dilate: An ideal studio day for me is waking up early , taking a walk to get some coffee, a breakfast sandwich , getting some sun and sitting down in a clean studio. I like to work earlier in the day while I’m fresh. I love working with other people and blending inspirations to create unique vibe in the studio. You never know what may come into the session.

What is your favorite show you’ve played and what made it special?

Dilate: One of my favorite shows I’ve played has been this party in an abandoned nuclear bunker. The setting was just so unique and the crowd was there to party. Everyone had to work a bit to get to the location.

What has been the most rewarding part of your musical journey?

Dilate: The most rewarding part of my musical journey would be the feeling of being able to create and share vibrations with the world.

What are some challenges of being an artist in 2023?

Dilate: Finding balance between creating and working on your brand which is essential to your success is a challenge most artist are facing today. I always make sure I  have other things around me to find inspiration in to keep me balanced.

Any words of advice for up & coming producers?

Dilate: Find something you like and run with it. There are so many tools to create and express emotion. I always tell people music should be like a journal and you let the current emotions decide what comes out. Don’t get stuck about what other people think or making things for specific labels. I try and not think about that during the creative process. Stay true to your craft there will always be ups and downs but just keep creating art.

When is it too late to ask for guest list?

Dilate: It’s never to late to ask for guest list if I love you :)
