5 Years of Zulu Records: MDE Choose the Tracks that Define the Label

Now celebrating 5 years in the business, Zulu Records have firmly cemented their place as a respected label within the underground house scene. MDE’s imprint has featured DJs such as Doorly, House of Virus, Marc Vedo, Jonathan Ulysses, Son of 8, Luca Debonaire and many more over the years. With well over 100 releases under their belts now, Zulu have so far had 104 tracks in the Beatport Top 100, 11 of which reached the Top 10, and 2 of which went all the way to the top spot. Representing styles across the house music spectrum, from new up-and-coming artists to industry giants and beyond, there’s no wonder why they’re currently sitting at #34 on Beatport’s best-selling House label charts.

To celebrate the occasion, Zulu founders MDE (formerly known as My Digital Enemy) have compiled a playlist of releases that define the crux of their sound over the last 5 years:

My Digital Enemy – Reaper (Jun 2012)

This track marks the point when we found our feet with Zulu.  We licensed the original to Toolroom Records for their Ibiza release.  Matteo DiMarr did this awesome remix for our fifth release.

My Digital Enemy & Jason Chance – Got To Be Strong (Jul 2012)

Continuing on with the tribal fused house beats that we had started the label on, ‘Got To Be Strong’ hit number 1 on Beatport and stayed in the top 10 for two months.  It was fair to say at this point Zulu had established itself as a force to be reckoned with.

Matteo DiMarr Ft. Roland Clark – An Angel’s Prayer (Oct 2012)

I remember signing this track and not believing that Matteo DiMarr had let us have it for Zulu. We were massive fans of his when we started Zulu, so this really was a dream come true.  It is still one of my all-time favourite Zulu tracks.

Carl Hanaghan – Strings of Life (Apr 2014)

This was a really big track for us in summer 2014.   Zane Lowe finished his set with it at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Glasgow!

Peter Gelderblom & Randy Colle – Got To Be Good (Jun 2014)

We still play this track now, as does Duke Dumont.  It really is testament to how good it is.  Proper house vibes and a serious amount of energy.

My Digital Enemy – Don’t Give Up (Jun 2014)

This was the next release after ‘Got To Be Good.’  Both tracks hit the number 1 spot on Beatport in succession.  That’s a first for us.

Lucas & Steve – Craving (Sep 2014)

I had to put this one in, as Lucas & Steve have gone on to do so well since their humble beginnings with garage inspired house vibes on Zulu Records!  It shows how their sound has developed.

My Digital Enemy – Jack My Body (Feb 2015)

This was our first track to be played by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1.  A really big turning point for us for the label.

Patrick Hagenaar – Love Rhythm (Oct 2016)

Our biggest release of summer 2016!!  Absolute belter of a track and perfect for festival play!

Zero B – Lock Up (Sonny Wharton Remix) (May 2017)

Sonny Wharton got in touch asking if he could remix Zero B’s lock up, which we own the rights to.  This is the outcome.  A real slamming slice of house that works just as well in the underground clubs and in the main room.
